  1. Downtown, BORING...Mesa...BORING and behind the times...MESA getting uglier by the minute

downtown has potential, but nothing makes you want to go there. You need to attract people with interesting things to do, see, experience. A place to wander and enjoy. Cafes, specialty shops (antique stores a start), artists, local sit and listen musicians (jazz, blues etc.) small weekend local artist only craft fairs, coffee shops, brewery, etc. Get rid of the boring businesses, and give the landlords incentives to fill up these empty spaces and create jobs.(think San Antonio riverwalk) Actually, there are so many empty big boxes and retail shops in Mesa..an incentive program for reasonable rents, etc. would be nice)As…

    • Forming an Industrial Space for Falcon Field

Within the 29.9 acres of free Mesa AZ space, the idea is to create a Class-A Industrial space, revitalize the Falcon Field park,
encourage the growth of businesses in the surrounding areas,
beautify the area, and increase the tax revenue for local businesses of the area. The holdings with the most interesting potential lie across Greenfield Road from the airport, with one group of parcels abutting McKellips Road on the north side and the other parcel abutting McKellips on the south side.

      • Locate the San Tan Brewery on Mcdonald St in downtown Mesa. Use the Alhambra hotel area.

Relocate the San Tan Brewery complex to South Mcdonald Street in Downtown Mesa, using the Alhambra hotel and adjoining buildings and parking lot. Great for downtown revitalization.

          • Change some of the traffic lights on side roads to a red or yellow blinking light between the hours of 11pm to 6am.

Some of the lights leading out of neighborhoods (Sterling and Brown Rd), for example, or lights leading onto/off of the highway (McDowell road and the 202) take forever to change during off-hours, thus leaving drivers frustrated. It would be easier if the lights were set to either a 4-way red blink, or a yellow blink on main roads and red blink on the side streets that connect to the main roads.

              • Put the city on a road diet

Mesa, and the Phoenix Metropolitan Area as a whole, is covered with wide, unyielding arterial streets. Three lanes in each direction with a center median or a two-way turn lane is the status quo on many of the arterials.

The ideas leading to these wide streets were well intentioned, but the results have been disasterous. The theory goes, build more roads, wider roads, and faster roads, and you can reduce congestion as well as move people from one destination to the next. What it has created is inhospitable streets that feel dangerous to pedestrians and bicyclists, are dangerous for drivers…

                  • Resynchronize traffic lights

We used to have the best traffic flow in the valley but last year the side street lights got out of sync - especially the side street lights. Synchronization of the lights is both green and a huge money saver for drivers.

                    • Build an eco-treasure and boost tourism

The lower Salt River Basin sits at Mesa’s doorstep and is a haven for bikers, hikers, river floaters, birders, cliff rappellers, picknickers, fishermen, campers and fresh-air seekers. The Tonto National Forest is a good steward given its limited resources. But the river basin could be so much more if the city raised public awareness, mobilized volunteer constitutencies and partnered to develop wider roads for bikers, an interpretive center for families, safer and more developed walking trails, bird habitat and more. Think Sabino Canyon.

                      • A downtown place to tell Mesa's story

Let’s celebrate Mesa’s story and strengthen the emerging downtown arts and cultural district by renovating the city-owned historic Federal Building at 26 N. Macdonald Street. By making it the downtown home of the Mesa Historical Museum, residents can more easily learn how their city came to be and how the past is shaping the future.

The City of Mesa has contracted with Ron Peters of HistoricStreetscapes and Vince Di Bella of Sameish + Di Bella Architects to do the renovation of the Federal Building in downtown Mesa. When completed in summer 2015, the Federal Building will house the Mesa Historical Museum and sections of the Arizona Museum of Natural History.

                        • preserve art icons at Mesa Junior

Mesa Junior High School, soon to be torn down because of the economy, has 3 historic cultural icons that need to be preserved and relocated. They are the mosic in the student cafeteria, and the weaving and needlepoint in the media center. Created in the '70 & '80's by hundreds of Mesa students, these are large murals masterfully crafted pieces of art. Proud parents that have attended the school and help create them have brought back their children to view their beauty for many years, it would be ashame if they were lost with the school.

We the students who are part of the Mayor’s Youth Committee for the Desert Uplands district feel the need for more sidewalks for streets that have little to none. If there are more sidewalks built or a repair of many broken ones, we hope to create a program to provide incentives for families to walk, or ride their bike to work. We plan to have local businesses help in this program with providing reward packages for the citizens that participate. The increase in sidewalks will also increase the amount of customers for businesses that are located on a street that…
