Eliminate no red arrows on left turn traffic lights.
This will allow left turns on all green lights, It has been proven in other cities to reduce traffic congestion, reduce vehicle emissions with fewer cars idling at a light, improve traffic flow and reduce speeding in the left turn lane to make the light.

Mesa needs an iconic "Welcome to Mesa" sign. Recently a film crew came into AMY and asked where it was.
Either at the East and West boundaries, Mesa needs an iconic "Welcome to Mesa" sign. Perhaps have a contest for design entries. Get the city involved with the process to encourage Mesa Pride. The sign could also be centered in Downtown Mesa.

Build a small arena near new cubs stadium
Build a smaller scale arena next to the news cubs stadium. A venue to host many events. Possibly the home of minor league hockey team, the ASU hockey team, ice hockey tournaments and a variety of other events. The small arena would pay for itself in a very short time. Monolithic style **** that seats 8000 or less. It can be used for concerts, theatrical productions, circuses, mesa high schools graduations, small conventions, sports venue for high school basketball games, volleyball, gymnastics, corporate or church functions. Could also be used as a venue for ASU sporting events especially if ASU…

Limit and Reduce Liquor stores and Smoke shops in Mesa NW particularly
The places with bars on the windows and drive-thru stores are a particular problem. they do nothing to improve communities. At the very least come up with some zoning laws about how close they can be to residential communities. I live in Casa Mesa II and there's too many within a 1.5 mile radius of our house. I will have to work on a count of smoke shops and liquor stores and report back

Start a Tool Library through the downtown Library
Many people that own homes here in Mesa can't afford to make repairs or fix up their property. Lending tools would eliminate financial barriers so people could fix their houses and improve their neighborhoods. Did you know the average power drill gets used around 15 minutes for the life of it? Tools are expensive and they are used less than 1% of the time they are owned. Here is a webinar on how to start a tool library and if you skip to 45 minutes into it, is where it talks about starting one through a government funded library.

Large-Scale Amusement Park that is Open During the Non-Summer Months
The City, through a public-private venture, should work with Economic Development to attract investors for a "Six Flags-like" amusement park that would be open most of the year, but closed during the hot summer months from June to September. Metro Phoenix has lacked this facility for a very long time. Think of the economic development opportunities associated with this sort of development! It would be "Arizona's Disneyland."

Rehab for drug addicts and alcoholics
Give these people a chance when no-one else did. Joe Arpaio institutionalized good people who clearly need help. There is no focus on recovery. The jails make things worse. We are not showing these people self-worth. They need to be brought up, not brow beaten by bully detention officers that have no clue what it is to be addicted. Individually they need different rehabilitation and professionals that have not only been there themselves but show love and a better way of life. Only a true addict would know. I'm a professional addict and would-with love donate my time.

Gluten Free Bakery
This is an idea that would be a natural compliment to the community garden. There are many people that would like to develope and sell GF products but do not have access to a certified gluten free kitchen. It would be self supported by the fees charged to use it just like other commercial kitchens. It would give Mesa a very big presence in GF movement because there is nothing like it anywhere in AZ. It has been done in other cities with great success.

Erect block fences along Harris Dr. opposite Mesa High.
A number of years back improvements were made to Gilbert Road where block fences were erected to give a uniform look along the road. They still look great. Similar walls opposite Mesa High school along Harris would hide an unsightly mix of broken walls and fences. Many newcomers to Mesa High are bused in along here. It would be nice for Mesa's first high school to give a good impression for the great school that it is. It is also in the 85204 area, which has been targeted for renewal.

Routew the new light rail around downtown at country club going 1 way down 1st street and the other down 1st ave, and joining back up at mesa Drive. This will preserve all the new businesses just starting up downtown, and allow for more development downtown and a better traffic situation there for the next 3 years.

Narrow the streets around Downtown Mesa
The wide streets throughout downtown are great for doing u-turns in a wagon with a team of four horses, but they do nothing for making downtown FEEL like downtown. Add medians, bike corridors, widen the sidewalks for big streetside patios...anything to make the streets of downtown Human-sized and walkable. Perhaps consider blocking off a couple of those streets and make it an outdoor mall like in Boulder, Co.

Mesa needs to have better zoning control with colors they allow on commercial businesses and strip malls. Stick to neutral colors, beige,
Mesa looks so hodge-podge because it allows business to paint any color they want..have better zoning as far as colors and elavations, and the city will have more continuity. Stick to beiges, tans and light colored terra cotta.

Modern parking management technology reduces urban blight, summer temperatures, and unemployment. Let's bring Mesa into the 21st century!
Mesa's minimum parking requirements were well-intentioned: build so much parking that it's never difficult to find a parking space. Unfortunately, forcing business owners with the costs of providing more parking than they would of their own accord causes them to raise their prices, and this creates unemployment as people do more of their shopping online.
Further, all the excess parking contributes to the urban heat island effect, raising temperatures in Mesa above their natural levels.
After dark, these parking lots turn into dead zones and attract crime. And frankly, parking lots are just plain ugly.
Let's reduce or eliminate these…

Underutilized senior citizens can be an untapped resource for the community
Willing senior citizens can mentor, tutor or care for the youth of today. Examples could be: Sharing their business/life knowledge, tutoring favorite subjects, supervised activities (Arts/crafts, light recreational), perhaps child care. These programs could be during the day or after school as possible replacements for expensive child care that people can't afford. Another possible payment for parents is barter (i.e. help landscape city hall area, paint buildings, etc.).
The city could provide the space. Optional services depending on the budget: Free shuttle for the senior citizens, free shuttle for children from school to the facility. Perhaps a nominal fee paid…

I'd like to see Mesa take the Coyotes off of Glendales hands and bring them to Mesa.
I want to see professional sports teams of all kinds to be brought to Mesa for something the entire community can come together around.
In my community nearly 70% of all the inhabitants are Canadian and would be a really popular attraction here in this part of town.
We can learn from what happened in Glendale and improve upon the arena contracting and associated costs..but the key is to give the city of Mesa a more "community" feel by giving the town "things" to rally around.
Hiking paths, bike paths and all those singular family, stroll in the park like…2 votes -
The Partnership for a Healthier America invites cities and towns to apply for $50,000 funding to start Play Streets: http://t.co/vLzq5JFP
Play Streets Overview
The Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) invites cities and towns across the United States to apply for $50,000 in funding to get kids and communities active as part of the nationwide PHA Play Streets program.Play Streets close specific streets to traffic on a routine basis and open that space to the community to encourage physical activity. They offer a high-impact, low-cost approach to encouraging and increasing physical activity, particularly in neighborhoods that often lack sufficient open space for activity. About Traffic Safety...
There are red light cameras, just what is the City of Mesa, the counties, and the state going to do about drivers who follow too close to the vehicle in front of them? So far I have seen NO enforcement of laws for maintaining a safe distance to the vehicle in front of them. Impatient "expletive" drivers

Build a professional sports complex in Mesa rivaling Reach 11 (Phoenix) and The Scottsdale Sports Complex (Scottsdale).
Having grown up in Mesa, having played youth sports in Mesa and now being heavily involved as a coach in competetive youth sports in Mesa, it is very important for the our city to focus on the future of our youth as well as Mesa's future financial stability. Building a professional sports complex in Mesa allows Mesa's sports organizations a place to train, play and hold sporting events and it also enables Mesa the opportunity to host the largest and best sporting competitions in Az and the US. For example, Reach 11 and/or the SSC have hosted our Men's and…
