Create better riding paths.
Currently the only places in the phx metro area to ride a bicycle more then a mile without stopping is the greenbelt in Scottsdale, or the long roads on the reservations. The canals can be better. Take the Santa Ana River in so-Cal as an example. LONG paths that go for miles.
137 votesBike/pedestrian paths included in the 2012 parks bond package are under way. See project updates and current timeline http://www.mesaaz.gov/imesa/meetingitems/3-26-13/ParksBond.pdf

Teardrop Banners
Teardrop banners should be reserved for very special occasions, such as festivals or the opening of a new store. They should NOT be used for routine sales or just to advertise a store. They are all over Mesa right now, cluttering up sidewalks and promoting such things as check-cashing and "We Buy Gold!" Oh Please! The city is really starting to look tacky, as is Phoenix. Tempe has restricted them, and so should we in Mesa.

6 Mesa Festivals - 1 Per or every other Month at all 6 Villages of Mesa
Mesa event committee need to put all their resources together and create 6 different events every other month in all 6 villages of mesa as the mayor calls it. That way you elevate all parts of mesa and not just one and everything gets abandoned and loses visibility. From culinary festival, Art festival, Cultural Diversity festival, Mexican festival, Motorcycle festival to Whatever it maybe .. it needs to a banner festival.. Bring all the people of arizona and other states and countries to Mesa. Make money off the spending and hotel stays.. we need funding to make things happen.. this…

iMprove public transportation within the City of Mesa
Mesa should be the Center of the East Valley and draw people to us; not just send people through us and on to Phoenix. Mesa is the 37th largest city in the country and yet small cities have much better transit systems than we do.
Mesa needs to rethink and redesign their mass transit systems to become more Mesa, and East Valley, focused. In doing so, we not only save the city money but we will strengthen the economic and social ties that will change us from a bedroom community to a destination city.
Below are suggestions for two areas…

Add splash pads at City parks.
I work for the Parks and Recreation Dept. and we receive lots of requests for these. Would enhance the parks and bring more people out to enjoy them.

Lower sales taxes and replace with property tax.
Stop trying to push through a primary property tax every few years without an accompanying decrease in sales taxes. Raising taxes is, for the most part, a non-starter in this city.
However, there are still huge benefits to adopting a property tax in place of a sales tax, even if it does not increase revenue.
Benefits for the city:
1) A more predictable revenue base.
2) Lowers the cost of buying goods in the city, which can only encourage more economic activity (I think we can all agree lowering the sales tax won't cause anyone to stop shopping in Mesa…61 votes -
iMesaLINCS
A partnership between the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, Mesa Public Schools, and the Mesa Public Library, iMesaLINCS is a place where residents of all ages could go to Learn, Innovate, Network, Connect, and Succeed (LINCS). The business community could use iMesaLINCS for business education, to receive assistance on doing business with the City, network, and enjoy a collaborative workspace. Students could visit iMesaLINCS after the school day is done to continue learning singly or in groups, using the same resources and technology available in the classroom. All residents would have free access to information and recreational print and digital resources…

Businesses should be able to file and pay sales tax online. Saves time and money.
This would save time and money. AZDOR has this. Improves accuracy by automatically calculating. Electronic copies can be saved to reduce paper waste. Could save more money from payers opting out of forms being mailed to them.
48 votesFunding model is under development. Working with Mesa Chamber of Commerce and business community to get feedback on value of this type of system.

Establish several business incubators in Mesa
The Heatsync incubator thread is the most popular so far. They would be a wonderful addition. But what if Heatsync falls thru? Let's start one right now. And why have just 1? Boulder Colorado has several business incubators. They have a few tech focused but also a filmmaking incubator among others. Why not have a few different ones each with a different focus. For example, we have 2 airports, Boeing, MD Helicopters and others. Why not have an Aerospace engineering and technology focused incubator. Why not a general business incubator? Let's make Mesa the "Most Entrepreneurial City in Arizona"

Modify the trash pickup procedure
By having all residents put their dumpsters on the same side of the street tens of thousands of dollars could be saved in fuel costs, man hours, vehicle maintenance, wear and tear on residential streets, noise and air pollution and the list could go on and on. This simple change would cost the city absolutely 0 dollars at the same time save 10,000's
44 votesCurrently the Solid Waste Management Department has single-sided collection in all mobile home communities. This type of service requires all barrels to be rolled to one side of the street for collection, therefore minimizing the number of times the collection vehicle drives on the street. The success of this service requires partnership and support from the Property Management and/or Property Owners. The ideal candidate for single-sided collection service is a community with narrow streets and minimal to no parking on the streets such as townhouses. Several of these communities are currently under evaluation for the feasibility of changing to this service.

Underground all of the power lines in the City of Mesa electric service area.
Over time, set aside money and coordinate other development and infrastructure projects so all of the power lines in the older part of Mesa that is served by City of Mesa utilities are put underground. Figure out how to do SRP too.
43 votesThis concept will be assesed for technological and economic feasibility perspectives, level of customer preference, and possible funding sources beyond the electric utility program.

Build an eco-treasure and boost tourism
The lower Salt River Basin sits at Mesa’s doorstep and is a haven for bikers, hikers, river floaters, birders, cliff rappellers, picknickers, fishermen, campers and fresh-air seekers. The Tonto National Forest is a good steward given its limited resources. But the river basin could be so much more if the city raised public awareness, mobilized volunteer constitutencies and partnered to develop wider roads for bikers, an interpretive center for families, safer and more developed walking trails, bird habitat and more. Think Sabino Canyon.

Change left turn signals to lagging left, its safer!
You are less likely to pull out in front a vehicle that is oncoming, opposed to the two sides. I have driven all over the valley for years and noticed less intersection accidents in Scottsdale and Gilbert who have lagging left turn signals. Especially in the winter months. A lot of older folks have tunnel vision but are still able to drive. This also allows the turnlanes to fill up moving more traffic per signal.

Form Volunteer Code Enforcement Groups
Let the homeowners have the upper hand for once!!
Look down any main thoroughfare in West Mesa. Individuals who feel no conection or obligation to our communty have created an ugly landscape of apathy and low-brow opportunism.
People everywhere in Mesa are tired of absentee landlords choosing our community for their irresponsible business practices.
1). Empower and train neighborhood volunteers to document offenses with photography (so that it is objective, factual, and available for everyone to see), and help pursue the individual cases to resolution.
2). Create a URL where Mesa residents can see the offenses ( images), and the…
