MESACO (or politically correct: "Little Mexico", Mesa style)
South Central Mesa has developed, without any apparent planning, a “barrio” I affectionately call “Mesaco” that is growing to look and feel a lot like a city in Mexico. I believe we need to be proactive in taking advantage of this resource that has grown here and build on it.
For example, we can foster the development of a large, planned Mexican style open air market, create a restaurant/cantina district and develop an industry zone featuring and building on our already present Mexican resources. Special events and educational opportunities can also be fostered and embraced in the district to show…

Get a cafe on the MAC campus...please! Give your captive audience a reason to linger
You have the contemporary arts gallery going to a free admission model. You have dozens of tables and chairs along the theaters (but no one is sitting at them except staffers). You have a store. You obviously want folks to stick around awhile once they get on the campus - start by offering a kiosk coffee/beverage cart and then build up to an actual cafe. Heard has one, Phx Art has one. Even TCA has "The Lounge". It's not enough to just have cafes along Main Street. The good ones are not within a close walking distance. I'd love to…

Mcc 4 yr school, incorporate Fiesta mall area for size and give life backbto the area.
If MCC was a four year school it could expand into the festa mall area and with the additional students and their needs it would bring back businesses to the fiesta mall area.

Bring back Pioneer Park
When I was young the park was an exciting place to play, the train was amazing, now it's behind a fence. Festivals like in Down town Glendale would bring life to the park and give her back her glory.

Forming an Industrial Space for Falcon Field
Within the 29.9 acres of free Mesa AZ space, the idea is to create a Class-A Industrial space, revitalize the Falcon Field park,
encourage the growth of businesses in the surrounding areas,
beautify the area, and increase the tax revenue for local businesses of the area. The holdings with the most interesting potential lie across Greenfield Road from the airport, with one group of parcels abutting McKellips Road on the north side and the other parcel abutting McKellips on the south side.17 votes -
Start a Tool Library through the downtown Library
Many people that own homes here in Mesa can't afford to make repairs or fix up their property. Lending tools would eliminate financial barriers so people could fix their houses and improve their neighborhoods. Did you know the average power drill gets used around 15 minutes for the life of it? Tools are expensive and they are used less than 1% of the time they are owned. Here is a webinar on how to start a tool library and if you skip to 45 minutes into it, is where it talks about starting one through a government funded library.

Develop Aerospace Technology Corridor at Gateway to attract major manufacturers
The Phoenix/Mesa gateway airport is a true diamond in the rough. It has the space, the zoning the adjacency to undeveloped land and access to a skilled and motivated technical labor force in a "right to work" state. Add to this the over 300 clear, flying days a year, relatively low cost of living and existing transportation systems, and major transport aircraft manufacturers should be anxious to come here. This develops a manufacturing base that drives other elements of the economy, and will for years to come.

Mesa Police Twitter System
A twitter page by the city police that is constantly monitored by officials, where citizens can tweet or privately message non-emergency situations (like updates on neighborhood watch, if the neighborhood is going to be goon for a week and to send more patrols, or if a loud party is going on nearby), and the police can react and adjust accordingly. Twitter can be accessed by computer or by most internet-enabled phones. This has been used in other cities, and has been proven to lower crime rates.

What if.....
Mesa has alot of great parks, but what if we were to develop a park or two that really 'draws' people/families to the area, such as Encanto Park in Phoenix or McCormick Ranch Railroad Park? Food vendors, possible rides for children, etc. Nothing on a large scale like a theme park, but 'right-sized' friendly.

Disc (frisbee) golf parks
Mesa needs more disc (frisbee) golf parks. It is very inexpensive to add to the parks and is a cheap, fun and family friendly exercise. Mesa has one park now on Harris, but it is becoming very crowded. It is a growing sport and would be simple and fun way to bring people to Mesa.

Bring a Grapefruit League team to HoHoKam
With the Cubs moving out to Riverview the City of Mesa needs to find a new team to fill HoHoKam Park, which is still a viable Spring Training site.
It would be horribly short sighted and petty for Mesa to try to poach a Cactus League team from another area City, that should not be done.
There are a few MLB teams that are West of the Mississippi that should be lured to HoHoKam. Obviously the facility is only big enough to house one team so Mesa should target either the Minnesota Twins, Houston Astros or St Louis Cardinals.

Public Open Space and Natural Areas
The city owns a few pieces of property in northeast Mesa that are supposed to turn into parks some day. Why can't they be opened now as natural areas with trails? Maybe sometime in the future, they can build an environmental education center to teach people more about the desert environment.

"Gates" by the entrance/exit to downtown Mesa
Not as in the kind that close, but rather like, say, in San Francisco where they have a visual cue that you are entering Chinatown. It might help to differentiate the used car lots from the real downtown.

Redeveloping Dying Strip Malls
Flexible zoning is needed to redevelop dying strip malls into pedestrian-friendly, high-quality, mixed-use complexes with shops, cafes and pocket parks similar to Kierland Commons (but not necessarily as expensive) and ones I have seen in France. The NE corner of Dobson & Baseline, now a wasteland of asphalt and dated buildings, could become a lakefront "downtown" for Dobson Ranch. Parking needs to be underground or under buildings.
